In The Stone · Earth, Wind & Fire (1979)

Song Archive

Here’s a fun track that will hopefully get you up and dancing! In the Stone is a standout song from Earth, Wind & Fire’s 1979 album I Am, and it’s been on repeat for me all week. This song is the perfect mix of funk, R&B, and jazz, with a big, bold sound. From the very first blast of horns, you know you’re in for something special. Maurice White, the band’s leader, shaped their signature sound by blending soulful rhythms with orchestral elements, creating a toe-tapping funk anthem. Philip Bailey, with his incredible vocal range, adds another layer of magic, making the vocals just as dynamic as the music itself. I’ll admit, I originally knew Bailey from his duet Easy Lover with Phil Collins—I had no idea he was one of Earth, Wind & Fire’s main singers from 1972 onward! The lyrics speak of love and truth lasting forever, comparing them to something written “in the stone”—solid and unchanging.

Fun fact: The horns were arranged by Jerry Hey, and the string arrangement was done by David Foster.

Hope you enjoy this fun tune!

Song: “In The Stone”

Artist: Earth, Wind & Fire

Album: I Am

Year: 1979

I found that love provides the key
Unlocks the heart and souls of you and me
Love will learn to sing your song, yeah
Oh yeah, love is written in the stone

Every man I meet walking time
Free to wander past his conscious mind
Love will come and take you home, yeah
Yeah, love ah written in the stone

Do you believe, my friend in what you claim?
People of the world all doubt the same
Bringing questions of their own, yeah
Truth is, truth is written in the stone

In the stone (In the stone, you’ll find the meaning)
(You’re not standing tall)
In the stone (In the stone, the light is shining)
(Ever touching all)
