Light My Fire · José Feliciano (1968)

Song Archive

I’ve listened to Feliciano! by José Feliciano so many times, and I absolutely love it. Released in 1968, this album was a breakthrough for Feliciano, blending Latin, pop, and folk influences in a way that felt fresh and exciting. His soulful, acoustic reimagining of The Doors’ Light My Fire became a huge hit, earning him a Grammy and putting him on the map globally.

Born in Puerto Rico and blind since birth, José Feliciano is a virtuoso guitarist and singer known for his expressive voice and unique fingerpicking style. Feliciano! is a perfect showcase of his talent, featuring a mix of covers and original tracks, all infused with his signature warmth and passion. It’s an album that never gets old, no matter how many times I listen to it.

Fun Fact 1: José wrote and recorded one of the most famous Christmas songs of all time, Feliz Navidad, in just about 10 minutes.

Fun Fact 2: In 1968, the same year Feliciano! was released, José performed the first-ever non-traditional rendition of the U.S. national anthem at the World Series. His take on the song was controversial at the time but paved the way for many artists to interpret the anthem differently in the future.

Fun Fact 3: José made a cameo appearance in the third season of the TV series Fargo.

I hope you enjoy this fantastic musician!

Song: “Light My Fire”

Artist: José Feliciano

Album: Feliciano

Year: 1968

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar
If I was to say to you, hey
Girl, we couldn’t get much higher

Come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire
Try to set the night on fire

Mm, the time for hesitation’s through
There’s no time to wallow in the mire
Darling, we could only lose
And our love become a funeral pyre

Yeah, come on, baby, light my fire
Come on, baby, light my fire, yeah
Try to set the night on fire.
