Here’s a fantastic tune originally from the classic 1956 musical My Fair Lady with music by Frederick Loewe and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner. This is a cover by the great Mel Tormé, with arrangements by Marty Paich. Tormé was one of the greatest jazz vocalists to ever grace this planet. He also played drums, piano, and ukulele. This album is a perfect example of his ability to treat his voice like a true instrument. His precision and control are incredible, and he showcases a few of his signature “tricks” in this great rendition. If you enjoy this song, I highly recommend listening to the entire album.
Fun Fact: Arranger Marty Paich was one of the greatest jazz arrangers of his time. His son, David Paich, later became a founding member of the ’70s and ’80s band Toto.
Fun Fact 2: From 1942 to 1943, Tormé sang and played drums in a band led by Chico Marx of the Marx Brothers.
I hope you enjoy this fantastic arrangement of “On The Street Where You Live.”
Song: “On The Street Where You Live”
Artist: Mel Tormé
Album: Mel Tormé Swings Shubert Alley
Year: 1960
I have often walked
Down the street before,
But the pavement always stayed
Beneath my feet before
All at once am I
Several stories high,
Knowing I’m on the street where you live
Are there lilac trees
In the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour
Out of every door?
No, it’s just on the street where you live
And oh, the towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear
People stop and stare
They don’t bother me,
For there’s no where else on earth
That I would rather be.
Let the time go by,
I won’t care if I
Can be here on the street where you live

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post (hopefully) one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling. Sorry if there are any mistakes.
