I hope your holidays were wonderful, wherever you are! I’m back on the sauce with another classic, this time from 1973: “Diamond Girl” by Seals and Crofts. This tune came on the radio the other day, and I couldn’t shake it’s amazing groove and feel. Of course, it’s none other than 18-year-old Jeff Porcaro behind the kit, delivering that simple but effective groove.
Jim Seals and Dash Crofts were a powerhouse soft-rock duo known for iconic ’70s hits like “Summer Breeze,” “Get Closer,” and, of course, “Diamond Girl.” Fun fact: Jim Seals is the brother of Dan Seals, who sang “Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)”—a song I’ve posted about before.
Their musical roots run deep. Back in the late ’50s, Jim and Dash were in a band called Dean Beard and the Crew Cats. After The Champs struck gold with their massive hit “Tequila,” most of the Crew Cats—including Jim and Dash—joined The Champs in Los Angeles. Interestingly, Glen Campbell also hopped aboard to ride The Champs’ wave of success.
After a brief stint, Glen, Jim, and Dash left to form a new band called Glen Campbell and the GC’s, playing gigs at The Crossbow in Van Nuys, California. Eventually, they went their separate ways: Glen launched his legendary solo career, while Jim and Dash teamed up to cement their legacy in soft rock history as Seals and Crofts.
Interesting Faith Fact: Jim and Dash were introduced to the Bahá’í Faith and became strong followers. They would pass out literature and talk about their faith at their concerts and in their songs.

Diamond girl
You sure do shine
Glad I found you
Glad you’re mine
Oh, my love, you’re like a precious stone
Part of earth where Heaven has rained on
Makes no difference where you are
Day or nighttime, you’re like a shinin’ star
How could I shine without you
When it’s about you that I am?
Diamond girl
Roamin’ wild
Such a rare thing
Radiant child

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post (hopefully) one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling. Sorry if there are any mistakes.
