Here’s a tune you’ve probably never heard before! Many of us know Carly Simon for her successful solo career from the 1970s onward, but I recently discovered her earlier work with her sister Lucy from the mid-to-late 1960s. Together, they formed a folk duo called The Simon Sisters and released three albums. Their journey began with a television debut on Hootenanny in 1963, which led to a contract with Kapp Records.
Their debut album, Meet the Simon Sisters, came out in 1964. Two years later, they grabbed unused material from those sessions and released the album Cuddlebug in 1966. The main reason I listened to this album was because of the album cover photo. I was flipping through a book dedicated to fun album covers and this one caught my eye.
Today’s featured track is the title song, “Cuddlebug,” which speaks of a “happiness blanket” offering comfort during moments of fear or uneasiness. I not ashamed to admit that I have a certain red blanket that comforts me sometimes when things are hard. My favorite line is:
“When lights are out before I sleep, my room gets awful roomy. There’s always Cuddlebug to keep the dark from getting to me.”
What a lovely way to describe the feelings we sometimes have before drifting off to sleep—“my room gets awful roomy.”
This album is fascinating to me because it provides a glimpse into the early influences that shaped Carly Simon’s artistry. One standout track is a haunting duet of “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” which I almost chose as today’s feature. If you enjoy “Cuddlebug,” I highly recommend giving that tune a listen.
I hope you all have a wonderful day today. Hopefully this song adds a tiny bit of happiness to your life.
Song: “Cuddlebug”
Artist: The Simon Sisters
Album: Cuddlebug
Year: 1966
They say it’s old, they say it’s small
They say that I’ve outgrown it
It’s worn to shreds but still and all
I think I need to own it
I call it my old cuddlebug
I know it’s just a blanket
I know it’s torn and out of shape
I know that washing shrank it
When lights are out before I sleep
My room gets awful roomy
There’s always cuddlebug
To keep the dark from getting to me
It’s good for hugging very tight
And pulling up above me
It’s warm and soft and just the right
Kind of thing to love me

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post (hopefully) one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling. Sorry if there are any mistakes.
