Eye in the Sky – The Alan Parsons Project (1982)

Song Archive

Alan Parsons is a musician, songwriter, producer, and sound engineer renowned for his work on iconic records from the late 60’s and onward. He was the sound engineer for groundbreaking albums like the Beatles’ Abbey Road and Let It Be, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon, and Ambrosia’s debut album.

Parsons began his career in tape duplication at EMI and, at just 18 years old, talked his way into a position at Abbey Road Studios. There, he became a regular fixture, contributing to countless projects.

After years of success as a sound engineer, Parsons turned down an invitation from Pink Floyd to work on Wish You Were Here to focus on his own musical ambitions. He teamed up with his longtime friend Eric Woolfson, who provided vocals on this song, to form The Alan Parsons Project.

Parsons described this song as addressing themes of “big brother” surveillance, imagining a world where a camera is always watching and even something (or someone) as distant as the moon could read the print on a newspaper while you sit on a park bench on earth. As the lyrics say:
“I am the eye in the sky, looking at you.”

Tape Fact: This album was the first of three recorded by the group using analog equipment and mixed directly to a digital master tape.

Cat Fact: Alan Parsons produced Al Stewart’s hit song “Year of the Cat.” He made several key suggestions, including adding the saxophone, which transformed the track into the beloved song it is today.

Austin Powers Fact: In the 1999 movie, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, Dr. Evil hatches a plan to turn the moon into a “Death Star” invented by Dr. Alan Parsons. This is referred to as “The Alan Parsons Project.”

Bulls Fact: The Chicago Bulls have used the opening track, Sirius,” as their iconic entrance theme since 1984. If you’ve attended a sporting event, you’ve likely heard it.

Hope you enjoy this great tune!

Song: “Eye In The Sky”

Artist: The Alan Parsons Project

Album: Eye In The Sky

Year: 1982

You’d think that people would’ve had enough of silly love songs
But I look around me and I see it isn’t so
Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs
And what’s wrong with that?
I’d like to know
‘Cause here I go again

Don’t say words you’re gonna regret
Don’t let the fire rush to your head
I’ve heard the accusation before
And I ain’t gonna take any more
Believe me
The sun in your Eyes
Made some of the lies worth believing

I am the eye in the sky
Looking at you
I can read your mind
I am the maker of rules
Dealing with fools
I can cheat you blind
And I don’t need to see any more
To know that
I can read your mind, I can read your mind

Don’t leave false illusions behind
Don’t cry cause I ain’t changing my mind
So find another fool like before
Cause I ain’t gonna live anymore believing
Some of the lies while all of the signs are deceiving
