Here’s a tune that got put on repeat while I was washing dishes the other night: “Silly Love Songs” by Wings, Paul McCartney’s post-Beatles band. Wings had a rotating lineup over its lifespan but was consistently anchored by Paul, his wife Linda, and Denny Laine, formerly of the Moody Blues. When Wings at the Speed of Sound was recorded, the band also included bassist Jimmy McCulloch and drummer Joe English.
According to Paul, this song was a response to critics (and possibly John Lennon) who dismissed him as a writer of “silly love songs” and “sentimental slush.” He explained to Billboard:
“…Over the years people have said, ‘Aw, he sings love songs, he writes love songs, he’s so soppy at times.’ I thought, Well, I know what they mean, but people have been doing love songs forever. I like ’em, other people like ’em, and there’s a lot of people I love—I’m lucky enough to have that in my life. So the idea was that you may call them silly, but what’s wrong with that?
The song was, in a way, to answer people who just accuse me of being soppy. The nice payoff now is that a lot of the people I meet who are at the age where they’ve just got a couple of kids and have grown up a bit, settling down, they’ll say to me, ‘I thought you were really soppy for years, but I get it now! I see what you were doing!’”
Released in 1976, Wings at the Speed of Sound was their fifth studio album, recorded at the height of the band’s popularity during the Wings Over the World tour. Some performances from the tour were captured on the triple live album Wings Over America, which I’ve got on vinyl and had to spin the other day.
Fun Fact: Every member of the band sang lead vocals on at least one track from Wings at the Speed of Sound!
Hope you enjoy this great tune!

You’d think that people would’ve had enough of silly love songs
But I look around me and I see it isn’t so
Some people want to fill the world with silly love songs
And what’s wrong with that?
I’d like to know
‘Cause here I go again
I love you
I can’t explain, the feeling’s plain to me
ah, she gave me more, she gave it all to me
What’s wrong with that?
I need to know
‘Cause here I go again
Love doesn’t come in a minute
Sometimes it doesn’t come at all
I only know that when I’m in it
It isn’t silly, love isn’t silly
Love isn’t silly at all
How can I tell you about my loved one?

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post (hopefully) one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling. Sorry if there are any mistakes.
