This recording captures two jazz legends coming together to create a masterpiece: Bill Evans on piano and Tony Bennett on vocals. The album, recorded in 1975, was born from a suggestion by Annie Ross, the singer from the trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, who encouraged Tony to collaborate with Bill.
Bill Evans once remarked, “I like Tony’s singing. To me, he is one of those guys that keep developing—digging deeper into their resources.” The duo met in England to discuss their song choices and approach. Reflecting on Evans’s meticulous artistry, Bennett noted, “He worked for three or four hours on each song we did … I couldn’t believe what he was doing. Over and over again, each thing was magnificent.” After the album’s release, Bennett called it “the most prestigious thing I ever did.”
Bill Evans, one of the most influential jazz pianists of the 20th century, had his breakthrough in 1958 with Miles Davis’s sextet, contributing to the iconic Kind of Blue. His trio work revolutionized modern jazz with its emotional depth and innovative chord voicings. Despite personal struggles, his artistry endured until his death in 1980, leaving an enduring legacy with works like “Waltz for Debby” and “Peace Piece.”
Tony Bennett, celebrated for his smooth, emotive voice, was a true master of the Great American Songbook. Best known for his signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” his remarkable career spanned over seven decades and included collaborations with artists from multiple generations. His timeless artistry and lasting influence ensure that he will be remembered and appreciated for generations to come.
The featured song, “Some Other Time,” comes from the 1944 Broadway musical On the Town with music by Leonard Bernstein. One critic described this album as a true collaboration, where “instead of the singer being accompanied by the pianist … both participants are equal partners.”
Listen for… Bill’s exquisite piano solo, where his left hand moves seamlessly between bass notes to establish the root and chords to complement his improvising right hand. Also, note Tony’s expressive vocal slide on the line “oh well”—a small but powerful touch in this extraordinary recording.
I hope you enjoy this great tune!
Song: “Some Other Time”
Artist: Tony Bennett & Bill Evans
Album: The Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album
Year: 1975
Where has the time all gone to?
Haven’t done half the things we want to
Oh well, we’ll catch up some other time
This day was just a token
Too many words are still unspoken
Oh well, we’ll catch up some other time
Just when the fun is starting
Comes the time for parting
But let’s be glad for what we’ve had
And what’s to come
There’s so much more embracing
Still to be done but time is racing
Oh well, we’ll catch up some other time

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post (hopefully) one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling. Sorry if there are any mistakes.
