This is such a great track from one of my favorite years in music. “Back Stabbers” by The O’Jays is all about keeping an eye on those smooth-talking buddies who might try to snag our partners. I’ve always loved this song because it stands out—I’ve never really heard anything like it in all my listening to ’60s and ’70s soul. The mix of the chords, strings, percussion, and lyrics is just so unique and catchy. This song is written by Leon Huff, and the great songwriting team, John Whitehead and Gene McFadden.
Fun Fact: This song was featured in Carlito’s Way with Al Pacino. A cassette of the soundtrack was actually found in O.J. Simpson’s white Bronco and taken as evidence during his arrest. I like to picture him blasting this track on his car stereo during that infamous freeway chase.
My Listening Tips/Thoughts: This track has some amazing arrangements for the brass, strings, and even melodic percussion. Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff really nailed it with their production choices. It has a slightly spooky vibe without feeling Halloween-like, almost like something out of a spy movie or a chase scene. And don’t miss the bass singer of The O’Jays—he’s incredible. The whole group is impressive, and their sound helped define ’70s soul.
Hope you enjoy!

Artist: The O’Jays
Album: Back Stabbers
Year: 1972
My other favorites from the album:
“Love Train“
Somebody’s out to get your lady
A few of your buddies, they sure look shady
The blades are long, clenched tight in their fists
Aimin’ straight at your back
And I don’t think they’ll miss
All the time, they want to take your place
The back stabbers (back stabbers)

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post (hopefully) one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling. Sorry if there are any mistakes 🙂
