This is a great track off of the 40th anniversary edition of the album Rhinestone Cowboy. Glen Campbell recorded this incredible album back in 1975. When you record an album, sometimes not all the songs make the cut. “Quits” is one of those songs. He recorded this song in 1975, and for whatever reason it was left off the album. It stayed in the vault until 2015, when they released a 40th anniversary special release. It included a few bonus tracks and alternate mixes, but this is the hidden gem, in my opinion.
If you know me at all, you know I love sad songs. “Quits” definitely hits hard. This song is written by a folk singer named Danny O’Keefe. Danny has a version, and a few other folks have covered it, but Glen is by far my favorite. This is a song that will definitely give you some feelings if you let it. It’s a tune all about divorce and the dissolution of a relationship. There are some incredible lyrics worth listening to in this song.
My Listening Tips/Thoughts: Every piece fits so well together on this recording. The whining guitar up top, Glen’s beautiful singing, the sweet flowing piano—it’s a masterpiece in emotion in music. Definitely go on the journey with Glen if you can. I also appreciate how little reverb is on Glen’s voice. It’s like he’s next to you, singing to you about his hardships. It hits me every time he says the line, “Call it separation, independence, divorce, if that word fits. Call it what you want to; I just call it quits.”
Hope you enjoy!
Song: “Quits”
Artist: Glen Campbell
Album: Rhinestone Cowboy (40th Anniversary Edition)
Year: 1975
My other favorites from the album:
“Rhinestone Cowboy“
“Marie“
“We’re Over“
“I’d Build a Bridge“
We come down to the place, where love never fits
Call it what you want to, darlin’ I just call it quits
If friends should call, just tell them
That we just don’t care
Tell them dreams are flowers, and that our,
Our gardens bare
Call it separation, independence, divorce
If that word fits
Call it what you want to, I just call it quits

My name is Michael Sanchez and I’m an avid record collector and obscure song searcher. My goal is to post one song a day that’s been on my stereo/turntable frequently. If you don’t like the song… too bad 🙂 You can just wait for the next one. All the info I find is from wikipedia/youtube/interviews/news articles/personal stories I’ve heard/random googling.
