Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold) – Dan Seals (1985)

Song Archive

Alright folks. Here’s a little sad song Sunday for you.

This song was written by Bob McDill and Dan Seals and was released on the album Won’t Be Blue Anymore in 1985. Dan Seals is the younger brother of Jim Seals of the great 70s duo, Seals and Crofts. Dan Seals didn’t let his brother have all the fun; he had his own duo around the same time as England Dan & John Ford Coley. His brother was the one that came up with the nickname England Dan. Apparently, Dan had an obsession with the Beatles as a young man. He liked them so much that he would put on an English accent and pretend to be them. So Jim decided Dan should be known as England Dan. After his time as England Dan & John Ford Coley, he rebranded himself as a solo country artist. He released a number of albums with this new identity and topped the charts with some fantastic tunes.

This song is definitely a sad one, but I love to listen to it and embrace the sadness. I’m a believer that happiness feels even better when you know what it feels like to be sad, even if it’s putting yourself in someone else’s shoes from a song.

Fun Fact: Dan Seals was a devoted follower of the Baháʼí Faith and promoted its teachings through his music and actions.

Listen for: The sadness. I love sad songs that sound a little happy. His little falsetto bit during the chorus gets me as well. Definitely pay attention to the ending chorus. The drummer goes to a half-time beat, and the song ends perfectly.

Hope you enjoy!

Song: “Everything That Glitters (Is Not Gold)”

Artist: Dan Seals

Album: Won’t Be Blue Anymore

Year: 1985

My other favorites from the album:
“Meet Me In Montana”
“Tobacco Road”

But oh sometimes I think about you
And the way you used to ride out
In your rhinestones and your sequins
With the sunlight on your hair

And oh the crowd will always love you
But as for me I’ve come to know
Everything that glitters is not gold
