Billy Preston is among the rare individuals who have received credit on a Beatles album at the band’s request. He became friends with the Beatles and recorded with them during the “Get Back” sessions. He played on that track as well as “Something” and “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” Billy Preston had been playing keyboards since he was a young child. He played on Nat King Cole’s television show; he played alongside Mahalia Jackson at age 10, and he even performed in a biopic of W.C. Handy in 1958. After his time with the Beatles, he started creating chart-topping songs and albums and even won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. This album is one of my favorites from him and features one of his biggest songs, “Nothing From Nothing.”
Fun Fact: The album was dedicated to St. Elmo’s Village, an inner-city children’s recreation centre in mid-city Los Angeles.
Listen for: Billy’s great keyboard chops. Also listen to his voice, he doesn’t hold back at all. He’s giving every ounce he has. The ending is too short for me though. I want them to keep vamping for another minute or two. We’re just getting started!
Hope you enjoy!
