LAX – Vulfpeck (2020)

Song Archive

One of my favorite bands from the last 20 years is a group called Vulfpeck, formed in Michigan in 2011. The band’s concept revolves around envisioning a German counterpart to the renowned U.S. session musicians of the 1960s, like the Wrecking Crew, the Funk Brothers, and the Swampers. The aim was to capture the essence of that era’s vibrant live rhythm section. I love to listen to these guys because they commit to the bit 100 percent, and they’re influenced by some of my favorite artists of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I love to listen to their songs and see if I can figure out what classic artist or song is driving their new track. This tune is definitely one of my favorites. I did happen to drive to Los Angeles last night to catch their final show of the live album they are recording, and this song is my wife’s favorite one. After they finished their new songs for the album, they played a bunch of their great songs from the last decade or so, and this was one of them. If you’ve ever picked up anyone at LAX, you know there’s no deeper love than that.

The guys behind the music are…

Joey Dosik — vocals, alto sax, composer
Jack Stratton — piano, overdubs, mixing, composer
Woody Goss — piano
Theo Katzman — drums
Cory Wong — guitar
Joe Dart — fender bass
Ryan Lerman — composer
Tyler Duncan — engineer, camera
Rob Stenson — lyric animations

These guys are really incredible musicians and so much fun to watch and listen to.

Listen for… The fantastic feel change when the sax solo happens around 2:50. Joe Dart is one of the best current bass players out there. The groove is insane. Listen to his great slap a dap dap on this tune. Also listen to Joey’s vocals. He has such a cool tone, channeling Marvin Gaye and other great soul artists from the past. Notice how you don’t hear absurd amounts of autotune on his voice. I’d be surprised if there was any at all. There is so much emotion and beauty when things are allowed to be imperfect.

Hope you enjoy!

I love my baby, she’s the best
She picks me up at LAX
What gets me through the longest flight
(From Cape Town through Dubai)
My baby, baby, she’s the best
She keeps me cool when I get stressed
Can’t wait to hold my honey pie
