Michael McDonald has one of those voices. It’s incredibly unique; he has an amazing range, and sometimes it’s difficult to understand what in the world he’s saying. This song is off one of my favorite albums, If That’s What It Takes. This was Michael McDonald’s debut solo album after being with the band The Doobie Brothers since 1975. This album was released in 1982, the same year The Doobie Brothers were giving their farewell tour. This album really doesn’t have a bad track on it, but one of my favorites is the first song on the album, “Playin’ By The Rules.”
This track has some incredible players on it. Michael McDonald on vocals & keys, Greg Phillinganes on piano, Dean Parks, Willie Weeks, Lenny Castro, Bobby LaKind, Steve Gadd on drums, and Edgar Winter plays a saxophone solo!
Listen for… Michael’s signature tone and upper range. I love it when he sings up at the top of his voice. Steve Gadd’s fills are so smooth. Also enjoy the minute-long outro. It feels so good. I hope you get a few smiles from this tune.
Enjoy!

“Every track on this album is INCREDIBLE!
Well, I know there’s a reason love don’t always rhyme
So you think by leavin’ you’re not wasting precious time
Love’s not always happiness
Sad, but it’s true, girl
Every fool’s got to learn he’s got nothing to lose
Playin’ by the rules
