Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do) – Aretha Franklin (1974)

Song Archive

When you look at the list of folks playing on this song you already know it’s going to be great.

Piano/Lead Vocals: Aretha Franklin
Guitar: Hugh McCracken
Electric Piano: Donny Hathaway
Organ: Richard Tee
Bass: Chuck Rainey
Drums: Bernard Purdie
Flute: Joe Farrell

And to put the icing on the cake, the song was written by Morris Broadnax, Clarence Paul and the great STEVIE WONDER!

THAT IS AN ALL STAR GROUP RIGHT THERE! These folks are some of the best studio musicians of the 60s, 70s and 80s. You’ll definitely hear it when you listen. In 1974 this song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. With that, Franklin became the first artist in the history of the Hot 100 chart to have a hit song peak at each position from one to ten on the chart.

Listen for… Purdie on the drums towards the end when Aretha sings “rap on your door,” and he “knocks” on the snare. Aretha’s incredible range and improved lines. Donny Hathaway having so much groove with just a few notes on the electric keyboard during the verses.

Hope you enjoy!

Though you don’t call anymore
I sit and wait in vain
I guess I’ll rap on your door
Tap on your windowpane
I want to tell you, baby
Changes I’ve been going through
Missing you, listen you
‘Til you come back to me,
That’s what I’m gonna do
